IUFRO Landscape Ecology WP Webinar Series
Emerging issues in landscape ecology
The IUFRO Landscape Ecology unit (8.01.02) launched a webinar series with regular sessions every 3-4 months with the aim of presenting and debating major current and future topics in science and society that are relevant for the landscape ecology and related communities.
The webinars have the participation of outstanding scientists with a global and integrative perspective of science and society.
Through this series, the IUFRO LE WP intends also to bring together members of communities of scientists and practitioners within IUFRO but also of organizations, such as IALE, FAO and other.
The series was successfully launched on June 24, 2020, with a webinar on “Landscape ecology and the covid-19 pandemic”. The debate on this webinar inspired the publication of an Editorial in the journal Landscape Ecology (read the editorial here). In November 2020, a second very successful webinar on "Urban Green Infrastructure: How can urban green infrastructure contribute to pandemic and climate resilience?" resulted in the publication in 2021 of Editorial in journal Landscape Ecology (read the editorial here). The following webinar took place on April 14, 2021 addressing radioactive contamination in forests in Fukushima and Chernobyl and webinar #4 on Landscape ecology in the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration took place on May, 2021. Our latest webinar took place on September 28 to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the WP.
The following webinar of the series is planned for August 2022.

Webinar 6
Forests and forest products: the use of native species and the role of sociobiobiversity in Latin America In the sixth webinar of the series, guests Juana Palma (Chile), Rene Camacho (Colombia) and Henrique Pereira (Brazil) and host Sónia Carvalho Ribeiro (IUFRO LE WP co-coordinator for Latin America), will present case studies and discuss the role of forests and forest products, particularly non-timber forest products (NTFP) and the use of biodiversity in traditional livelihoods and the economy (national and international). They will also address issues related to data available for assessing NTFPs role and to policy, as well as other topics of interest for both Latin America and international audiences. Webinar 5
IUFRO Landscape ecology 30th Anniversary The webinar celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Landscape Ecology WP by bringing together old and new members to share experiences from the past and debate the future of the WP. The webinar is part of the IUFRO World Day 2021. Watch the video of the webinar here. |
Webinar 4
Landscape ecology in the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration The United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030) put restoration at the center of political but also scientific and technical agendas. The landscape is a useful scale to address ecosystem processes, functions and services, governance and involvement of stakeholders in decision-making, and trade-offs and synergies supporting integrated, sustainable, resilient and equitable land management. This webinar will discuss opportunities that the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration brings to forest landscape ecology and the contributions of research and development in forest landscape ecology to the goals and objectives of the initiative. The webinar will provide an overlook of forest landscape restoration initiatives in the world, in particular in areas affected by deforestation and degradation. Watch the video of the webinar here. |
Webinar 3
Forests in Fukushima and Chernobyl: People, wildlife and landscape It has passed ten years since the nuclear power plant accident of Fukushima and 35 years of Chernobyl. The impacts of these accidents on land use/cover change, wildlife, and people's lives in the surrounding regions were discussed extensively by three panelists, with some participant comments via Google Forms. A multidisciplinary approach such as landscape ecology has the potential for analyzing various aspects of these impacts between people and nature in and around the regions. This was a joint webinar of IUFRO Landscape Ecology (8.01.02) and Radioactive Contamination of Forest Ecosystems (8.04.07) units. The video is now available. Watch the video of the webinar here. |
Webinar 2
Urban Green Infrastructure: How can urban green infrastructure contribute to pandemic and climate resilience?" How can landscape ecologists enable green infrastructure to play a more active role in avoiding and responding to pandemics and climate change? How can green infrastructure contribute to urban resilience? These are some of the issues addressed by the IUFRO Landscape Ecology Working Party in this webinar, the second of a series dealing with major current and future topics that are relevant for the landscape ecology and related communities, with the contribution of outstanding scientists with a global and integrative perspective of science and society. Webinar 1
Landscape Ecology and the COVID-19 pandemic Landscape ecology has the potential to play an active role in explaining, describing and forecasting the emergence and spread of zoonoses, to inform decision-making on sustainable measures to minimize their spread and to build spread safe landscapes. This is a research responsibility for landscape ecology but mostly it is an obligation for landscape ecologists to be actively involved in the development of solutions for evolving societal problems. These are the main issues addressed by the IUFRO Landscape Ecology Working Party in this webinar, the first of a series dedicated to emerging issues in landscape ecology and society, with the contribution of outstanding scientists with a global and integrative perspective of science and society.
